Borrobol Gunns (chief link), assorted genealogy; Thomas Sinclair Clan Gunn Supplement 21, 5 May 1903
REVIEW
Probably the most useful part here is the detailed account of Borrobol lines; they are linked to George Gunn of Rhives and certainly are of ‘Chief’ link descent. Otherwise we have a commentary about the previous Robert Gunn of Braemore story, some bits and pieces about various Gunn families and another myth / history event.
KEY ISSUES / PEOPLE / PHRASING
· Commentary about the Robert Gunn of Braemore story ‘substration of historical truth’. Certainly not a tacksman. Was Earl John trying to impose a rent on Robert Gunn? Was the story told by Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster? The Orkney expedition part is of value. Some Gunns will have died at the battle of Summerdale, 4 miles north-east of Stromness on 18 May 1529.
· CANADIAN AND OTHER GUNNS. Reverend Archibald Gunn of St Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada wrote about ‘old William Gunn of Borrobol, Kildonan and his wife Nancy.’ Their daughter Catherine was born about 1780 and married Angus Macbeath of Crockdubh or Blackhill. Her sister Jessie was married to Sergeant William Nichol. Elizabeth was the youngest of the girls. Brother Archibald was born about 1798. He and his father were the last of the Borrobols, near relatives of the chief of the clan who died in 1763, Captain Alexander Gunn. Was s George the son or brother of Alexander the Chief? I am the eldest son of William of Six Mile Brook, Pictou, Nova Scotia who was the eldest son of Archibald of Borrobol. He came to Pictou in 1815, son of the above William and Nancy... There must have been about 100 Gunn families which came to Canada at different times. Among these were there are quite a number of McHamish families... a large number of Kildonan people settled in Pictou county, much larger than in Kildonan Manitoba.... Snaekoll.. Hector of Thurso and George Gunn of Rhives...
· Mrs Stephen Batson Welford Rectory Newbury England is half a Gunn and has Canadian relatives. Anne Gunn her mother b 1839 was daughter of Daniel of Woolwich. His afther was Daniel was in the Royal Artillery and went out to Hamilton Canada early in the century where Daniel, the son, subsequently settled and where Mrs Batson’s mother was born Daniel Senior married Elizabeth Taylor who secondly wedded Captain O’Brien RA. Ann Gunn married Rev. Dr Blackman, Mrs Batson’s father.
· Captain William C. Gunn Brubster was born in Strathalladale. Parents died young. Robert Sinclair Tornahuden Brubster took an interest in him. Enlisted. Was at Waterloo. Army history. Went to the Cape of Good Hope etc. His sisters were Mrs William Gunn Backlass Watten, Mrs Hill Olrig, and Mrs Oag Fishcurer Wick. He had several brothers in the army. Colour Sergeant Robert Gunn 93 Regiment (America, India, Sebastapol) 3rd son of William Gunn of Backlass Watten. Donald Gunn Forsie was a Waterloo veteran. Major William Gunn Houstry Dunbeath wa of the Royal Naval Brigade in the Indian Mutiny, a pensioner who resided in Mnachester. Robert, brother of the above Houstry Dunbeath 21st regiment was in the Crimea. Donald, another brother was recalled while on the way to Crimea due to ill health.
· Reverend Daniel Gunn... b. 1773 (Staxigoe?) near Wick. Educated Edinburgh. Theology under Rev. Greville Ewing Glasgow... six years evangelist in Ireland ... Worked at Christchurch Hampshire for 32 years. Died June 1847.
· ANOTHER NOAH. Rev John Cameron says in 1590 a waterspout near or on Loch Calder caused the water to rise and flooded the home of a robber and his whole family. They drowned except his youngest child and the nurse. (Seems a bit moral to be true...). The ancestor of the Hendersons... (and a variant reading is given.)
