Lord Lyon Interlocutor on Clan Gunn
Lord Lyon has pronounced on one aspect of Gunn 'Chief' lines, see
http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/files/Gunn,%20Michael%20James%20-%20Interlocutor%20and%20Note.pdf
This document makes the following clear (in my opinion)--
1) The Chiefship can inherit through the female line.
2) The most senior line is to be found from
a. ‘no. 30, an unnamed daughter, married to John Gunn of or in Kinbrace; and the recording of no. 31, George Gunn in Dalfridh, as the son of the said unnamed daughter, no. 30, and the said John Gunn of or in Kinbrace’
b. ‘according to the Sage Manuscript Donald Gunn Crotach is said to have had five children by his wife, the daughter of Sutherland of Torboll: three sons and two daughters. The sons’ names are given as Alexander, George and William, but “the daughters’ names are not recollected, but that one of them was married to Donald McKay of Skerray and the other to John Gunn of Kinbrace.”
And further on George Gunn in Dalfridh
Lord Lyon has pronounced that George Gunn in Dalfridh was directly related to the Chiefs.
I suggest that Dal is the anglicised form of Dail (a level field by a river) and that the river is the Frithe Friad ('Free') river (Abhainn na Frithe) which runs through Borrobol forest to Borrobol, and Dalcharn. Hence DalFrithe. Along it are ruins and a graveyard. It is certainly in the right area; his father was John Gunn in Kinbrace which is very close. His mother was 'Unknown', the daughter of 'Chief' Donald 'Crottach' Gunn.

Frigh is also used in the 1868 Gazeteer which seems useful see http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/SUT/Kildonan/Gaz1868.html
And further on Lord Lyon
In respect of chiefship of clans there is the position of Lord Lyon. One of his roles is to grant the ‘undifferenced arms’ to the senior line of the clan or family. So that the holder of those arms is chief of the name and arms. It is then up to the clan to accept that individual whether male or female as clan chief.

Lord Lyon does not appoint a Clan Chief; he appoints 'undifferenced arms'.
