As discussed in the main text figures in brackets such as (1,1) give the MacHamish identification; the first number identifies the generation, the second the seniority of that MacHamish. Some people could have two – or even three – different sets of numbers reflecting the various ways they descend from Coroner Gunn.

had Alexander ‘Osclay’ Gunn (11,31 from his mother’s side and generation 13 from his father’s side)
Had Catherine ‘Osclay’ Gunn (12,38 from her grandmother’s side, generation 14 from her grandfather’s side) married Donald ‘Braehour and Brawlbin’ Gunn (13,65)
Catherine ‘Osclay’ Gunn (12,38) married Donald ‘Braehour and Brawlbin’ Gunn (13,65) and they had eight children.
The oldest child was John Gunn in Durness (13,58) who married Catherine Gunn in Campster, being a daughter of John ‘Dyke’ Gunn (13,67) with possible descendants but none now capable of continuously having the name Gunn.
The second eldest child was Barbara ‘Braehour’ Gunn (13,59) who married Alexander ‘Bualchork and Brawlbin’ Gunn from which marriage comes my Australian Gunn line. This line is the most senior known MacHamish line to have always had the surname Gunn.
The fourth child was Captain Alexander Gunn who created the 1896 tree with living descendants. As already noted -
Captain Gunn, Braehour … is admitted to be, if not the greatest, at least a genuine, living authority on Gunn questions … It were strange if the captain had not been well posted up in all historic points, seeing that his father, Donald Gunn, Braehour, was the acknowledged sennachy or historian of his time … an unusually learned sennachy[1].
