Thomas Sinclair ‘Clan Gunn History Supplement 36’; the end of Sage, some Gunn Chief genealogy and some errors...
REVIEW
An interesting article with some history, some Gunn Chief genealogy (but based on the male only idea) and some ‘errors...’ A bit of my family in it, so that makes me biased towards it of course...
KEY ISSUES / PEOPLE / PLACES / IDEAS
· SAGE CONTINUED. 24 January 1639 Colonel William Gunn was made a knight at Berwick, and soon after made Gentleman of the King’s Bed-Chamber .... process of heirship obtained by Mr Hector Gunn late of Thurso... error... William Begg M’Hamish is brought in among the direct lineal descendants of the coroner, and that he became an additional chieftain. He was only a collateral branch of that name. It is therefore inconsistent that he should be so indulged when his eldest brother had issues called John of Navidale and Killearnan... declaration made by Robert Gunn of Achnakin consisted in asserting that he knew of no brother of Donald called George , from whom, as some witnesses deponed, was the first ancestor of Hector Gunn. This supposed George ahd three sons, 1st Donald, 2nd Robert, 3rdJohn from which youngest hector Gunn was immediately descended. BY Achanakin’s doubt ...the descent of Hector Gunn had to be derived from the next collateral George, second son of Alexander Gunn of Navidale and Killearnan.
· FINAL WORDS ON THE CHIEFTAINCY. And see http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/files/Gunn,%20Michael%20James%20-%20Interlocutor%20and%20Note.pdf
· Issues about reliability of Sage... different handwriting... Rev. Alexander Sage... Corrish Gunns... Robert Gunn Achanakin... Gunn of Watten MS... Mrs Clark ... Captain Alexander Gunn’s daughter and a niece of a Chief of Hector’s lineage (that’s my area, I think descendants still active...)... legality of hector Gunn as Chief (interesting, sa no Chief has ever been ‘legal’; none have been agreed by Lord Lyon)... Clan Gunn Society Thurso 18 December 1821... No 1 being George Gunn Assynt, son and successor to hector the Chief... Alexander Gunn merchant Thurso... pages 172-4 of The Gunns by Thomas Sinclair... George Douglas Lawyer...Rev. Alexander Gunn Watten... Captain Gunn Braehour... Dr William Gunn Futuna Tonga (see earlier entry)... Hugh Gunn Inspector of Schools South Africa...
· Aeneas Gunn ...issues of identification of the writing... his own sketch, see Thomas Sinclair ‘The Gunns’ ...
· Corrish... Latin MS of Ross’s ‘Annals of Sutherlandshire’...’Corrish descendants are the nearest relatives and lawful heirs to the Chief.. (now, with female descent allowed...)... William Gunn Arichlinay Kildonan and latterly of Backlass, Watten was evicted in 1819. He was the true chief. He came to Caithness with his brother Adam (latterly of Dunbeath) and Alexander of Labour-in-vain, Thurso. The 3 brothers were were also grandson of Robert Gunn Achanakin the sennachie by his daughter Ann. David the catechist ... was evicted and came to Strathmore with his nephews. . Alexander Gunn, the youngest son of the Sennachie’ came to Thurso, where he was a merchant and tenant of Achscrabster and Hill of Forss quarries; largest employer of labour at the time. His daughter was the wife of the late Wm. Macdonald, merchant Macdonald Square, and farmer of Pennyland, Thurso. William of Backlass’s son Alexander Achinavast was present at the notorious burning evictions about nine years of age. He was the next chief and had eight sons... these Corrish theories must henceforth banish...
· Because Hector was veritable Chief everything personal to him has historical interest... Captain Gunn Braehour... 2 February 1803 Thurso house described... Factor George Gunn Rhives daughters are Jessie, who married the Rev Arthur Dixon, Vicar of St. Stephen’s Devonport, Christina, married to Donald Macleod Smith advocate and Sheriff-substitute of the counties of Elgin and Nairn, Margaret married to Malcolm Charles Machardy, Manager of the London Chartered Bank of Australia Sydney (they retire to Caithness till her husband dies, then she goes back to NSW to her children who die without issue; see earlier entry), Elizabeth... Donald Gunn the elder son died at Truro in 1863. Hector, the only other son, died at Elgin in 1874
· At this date the chieftaincy went to John of the Braehour family, whose son Alexander in Durness succeeded him(okay, my area..this is possible if one of my circa dates is wrong... given the time periods involved I would think people at the time would know if he was lying AND this is all based on male only lines, which is now wrong... )
· John’s father Donald the sennachy, in Braehour and Catherine, daughter of Alex. Gunn in Breakachy, Latheron, contracted in order to marriage on 22nd January and were married 28 February 1807 (see earlier entry on Osclay...)
· ERRORS in Sage; William Gunn Cattaig and his 100 Gunn followers are made Keiths for the battle of Torran Dhu, Rogart in 1517... The manuscript gives two accounts of the event, the latter in print, correct about Gunns and their Chief William M’Hamish of Cattigh At the start of Sage read Gairsy instead of Grimsay.. the burning at night of Sandside cornyard by Gunns November 1615...
