On the correct spelling of Gunn Mckaimish / Mckeamuish / MacHamish / Mackeamish
One of the sons of the coroner was James; his line – the son of James - is often called the ‘MacHamish’ line in one spelling or another. The below document shows three usages of the word; one Mckaimish and two of Mckeamuish. Note the word is used to differentiate a person, not to imply any importance.
Given the document is written on behalf of Lord Strathnaver on 23 September 1738 it is probable that both these spellings should be viewed as correct.
