Dirlot cemetery
I have been sent the following scans from the 'Northern Ensign' newspaper of April 1884, which provide useful information..
I note the following; Dirlot Castle residence of the Sutherlands, Ruidr Derg, Red Knight, normal Gunn / Keith story, George Gunn Cruner, James in Kildonan, descendants of Robert the second son in Braemore, descendants of John the third son in Cattaig where Dirlot cemetery is. The 'burying ground was not built till 1833 by Mr Gunn, Dale ... A number of fine stones are built into the wall', Marcus Gunn Cattaig Marcus Mohr (Big Marcus) born 1634- died 1734, this Marcus was the eldest son in direct descent from John of Cattaig, religious issues, Marcus had three sons and two daughters - John of Cattaig d. 1768/ 1770 perhaps died 1768 and tombstone erected 1770?. This John had married a daughter of William Campbell of Strathmore. Another tomb at Dirlot is Alex Bain of Backlass who died at Knockglass; he married a sister of the above William Campbell and had a son William who was not noted for liberality and the story of Robert Donn the Celtic poet is given with regard to 'thigging'.
Now, importantly, a daughter of Alexander (Bain) married a son of William of Kinbrace ('who was closely related to the Chief') and 'taught her grand-daughter still living' (in 1884). The exact William of Kinbrace line has been confused in Gunn histories (various Gunns own Kinbrace at various times) but documents relating to him are on this site; the Kinbrace owners for this period descend from William Beag, brother to Alexander Gunn the 4th Mackeamish. So, another line of people who descend from the 'Chiefs' ...

a good height, completely encircling the old castle.
The chief interest associated with this evidence is its connection with the feud of the Clan Gunn

that of his father, and unlike it, is of the style known as the "auld threuch stane" - a large flagstone placed upon two smaller ones at each end. something in the form of a table. The tombstone records simply the name and date, but the latter
