The Senior MacHamish Gunns / (the ‘Clan Gunn Chief’ line)
For an indented version of the below charts see https://clangunn1.blogspot.com/2020/05/the-senior-machamish-gunns-clan-gunn.html There is much rubbish written as to who was, and who was not, ‘Clan Gunn Chief’ - more accurately, the Senior MacHamish Gunn. The correct main line follows. But first note Coroner Gunn died about 1452 - Sir Robert Gordon in his ‘History’ says that the Coroner ‘floorished’ when there was no Earl of Caithness which was the situation until 1452. An Earl was created in 1452 but it is not clear that Earl ever made it to Caithness so 1452 is only an approximate year for the Coroner to die, it may have been a couple of years either way. After the Coroner I am assuming a new generation of MacHamishes about every thirty years which is reasonable given the lack of birth control but probable high infant mortality. The Senior MacHamish Gunn / ‘Clan Gunn Chief’ line is the focus of the first tree; the last trees centre on descent from the Coroner for those who marry into the Senior MacHamish Gunn line which is the Osclay Gunns. For proof you will have to see the lives in my book The Gunns: History, Myths and Genealogy; such proof includes Sutherland Estate papers and records from the National Records of Scotland which were not explored in earlier Gunn history texts. ***** Names in bold show descent from the Coroner to 8. William Mhor (who died without known children); the Senior MacHamish Gunn line then became descent from William Beag who was William Mhor’s uncle. Generations 3-5 are approximate. Part 1. The Senior MacHamish Gunn line / ‘Clan Gunn Chief’ line 1. Coroner GUNN (d. c. 1450). 2. James GUNN (c. 1420- ). 3. William MacHamish Cattaig GUNN (c. 1450- ). 4. William MacHamish GUNN (c. 1480- ). 5. Unknown MacHamish GUNN (c. 1510- ). 6. David GUNN (c. 1530- ). 7. Alexander MacDavid GUNN (c. 1560-c. 1624) Sp. Barbara MACKAY (c. 1570- ). 8. William Mhor GUNN (c. 1593- ). Died without known issue. 7. William Beag GUNN (c. 1561- ). See Parts 2 and 3 for further sons and descendants. The fourth son William Acheneccan Gunn, with descendants, is not traced in these charts. 8. Alexander Killernan GUNN (c. 1590-c. 1657). Sp. Mary Christiane (Dame) (Lady Fowlis) MACKAY (c. 1598-c. 1657). 9. John Killernan GUNN (c. 1636- ). A spendthrift. It is probable that Killernan was returned to the Sutherland Estate because of debts he owed. Sp. Katherine (Christina?) SINCLAIR (c. 1640- ). 10. Alexander GUNN (c. 1658- ). Did Alexander ever take over at Killernan? His two brothers and he disappear from history – probably due to the loss of Killernan and their consequent need to make a living. This is the senior MacHamish Gunn line if it could be found. 9. Alexander GUNN (c. 1638- ). Was he ever of Killernan? Married well but with no known children. Sp. Christina MACKAY (c. 1645- ). 9. Morrison GUNN (c. 1760- ). Morrison Gunn is sometimes recorded as the last of the ‘Clan Gunn Chiefs’ which is wrong as it is probable that he died before his brother. 10. George Corrish GUNN (1682- ). It is possible that this line is not extinct but are descendants Gunn? 10. Esther GUNN (1685- ). Descendants, no longer Gunn. 10. William (Lt. Col.) GUNN (c. 1686- ). Descendants, no longer Gunn. 10. Margaret GUNN (c. 1708- ). From whom is the senior MacHamish line with continual Gunn named descendants. Sp. John Houstry Dunbeath Kinbrace GUNN ( -1780).
