I am rechecking my material on 'Coroner Gunn' - or George Gunn Crowner as he is often wrongly called. I can find no record of his parents nor any link to provide a connection with earlier Gunns. And that includes detailed searching in academic / historic records and in the post-truth quasi-histories accepted by Clan Gunn Societies and many tourists. So, given there is NO evidence - real or fanciful - to provide a link with ANY earlier Gunn generation it highlights how ridiculous it is to believe that through him 'Gunn Chief' descent from the Orkney Islands / Viking origin is proved. It isn't. 'Clan' Gunn origin is that of a non-kindred tribe of early settlers in Sunderland / Strathnaver / Caithness. For more on the absurdities of the non-existent 'Clan Gunn Chiefs' before the Coroner see clangunn.weebly.com/on-the-non-existent-gunn-lsquochiefsrsquo-between-the-orkneys-and-before-gunn-coroner-for-orkney-gunns-see-the-next-column.html Gunn Coroner was the first Gunn to become visible in history... and that's important. And note that Coroner Gunn is never called Chief ... but that's another entry...

So I think part of this is an ugly homogenization of Scottish history that happened a few centuries ago. There was this master "Rob Roy" / "Brigadoon" template that everyone tried to back their stories into.
