Real Gunn history is less romantic, less 'Great Man' school of history and less far fetched than that offered by the dreamers who wrote the early stories. History should be about truth; Scottish history has suffered too much from the myth makers.
The recently discovered 1822 Clan Gunn Tree makes it clear that George Gunn of Corrish ( of the 'Clan Gunn Chief' line) had two sons Donald and Alexander but both died without issue by 1822 - therefore ignore earlier comments I have made about this line and descendants. For more on this issue see the page above next to HOME or see www.academia.edu/49523601/The_ongoing_traditional_Clan_Gunn_Chief_line for a fully endnoted paper with downloadable pdf for detailed discussion of the de facto Clan Gunn Chief line. I have included this new information into the 2nd editions of my 'Clan' Gunn histories detailed below.

There are basically two 'Clan' Gunn histories -
- My academically based Gunn history where primary sources are used and options evaluated. This has the Gunns as a non-kindred tribe of original settlers in the Northern Highlands. No historic chief, as they were never a clan. This non-kindred tribal group history remains valid up until a generation or two after the Clearances when the 'tribe' memories and behaviour would no longer hold due to increasing social and historical value moderation by the new societies around the Gunns; Gunns are then increasingly best seen as part of other regional or other national histories. (The Gunn name may be shared but it is not based on major, shared genealogical links, nor any other uniquely Gunn aspects, for an example of this absurdity see the last paragraph in Mark Rugg Gunn's text on page 31).
- Clan Gunn Society 'history' is a mix of romantic fiction, myth and the odd fact where academic argument is ignored. For example, there is no way Gunns have an Orkney Islands origin see http://clangunn.weebly.com/clan-gunn-has-no-orkney-origin.html, there is no way a Clan Gunn helped discover America see http://clangunn.weebly.com/on-a-gunn-helping-discover-north-america---sir-james-gunn-of-clyth-crowner-of-caithness-and-the-westford-knight-myth.html and there is no way Gunns are a clan and so should not have a Clan Gunn Chief see http://clangunn.weebly.com/are-gunns-a-clan-2-chief-implications.html. This Clan Gunn Society pseudo-history springs from the tartanisation of Scottish history see http://clangunn.weebly.com/on-scottish-clan-re-invention-in-the-18th-and-19th-centuries.html and has appealed to tourists from the 1820s on to today because of its romance and easy wish fulfilment of links to famous people, however it's not history, more Project Fantasy...

Concerning Chiefship issues -
... an elected Chief is alien to the whole principle of Celtic civilisation ...
Thomas Innes, Lord Lyon, page xxii from his Foreword to Frank Adams and Thomas Innes The Clans, Septs and Regiments of the The Scottish Highlands 1934
The derbhfine ... should not consider proposing a person for chief unless there is no real hope that a genealogically related descendant could ever be found.
Lord Lyon 19 February 2002 'Clan Gunn original Chief' descendants can be found - I'm one and there are many others.
it has become evident that there is in all probability clear and proveable lines of descent senior to that of the present Commander
Lord Lyon Sellar 2012 http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/files/Gunn%20Family%20Convention%20-%20Interlocutor%20refusing%20petition%20in%20hoc%20statu.pdf
But are Gunns a clan? Not under historic / academic definitions, so a clan chief is absurd.
